Since the 1970s the park area of Haus Weitmar has been home to distinguished works of contemporary art. On the occasion of the opening of the KUBUS in May 2010 François Morellet donated this large-sized concrete sculpture to Situation Kunst. These sculptures at the park are also additional items to the established oeuvre of each artist seen in the Kunstsammlungen of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Neons by accident, 2003

Neons by accident (16 arcs de cercle), 2003

Room-installation 400 x 500 x 700 cm with 16 bent fluorescent tubes, each 2 m long

The artifact Neons by accident was developed by François Morellet specifically for Situation Kunst. The slightly bent fluorescent tubes are segments of a circle, which has a radius of five meters – equal to the width of the room. The arcs were positioned according to randomized set rules and systems, in order to liberate the process the art from handwritten traces. The viewer starts looking for a system automatically, but single pieces constantly breach the rules of the presumed system. Because Morellet wants the parts of the circle to be understood as lines, they are shown in daylight. The florescent tubes are elements of a drawing in space.
