The museum Situation Kunst in Bochum-Weitmar offers a holiday program for children between the ages of 10 and 14 years. Now in its fourth year, this program uses dialogues with the children to introduce the works of Richard Serra, François Morellet and Norbert Kricke, among others. The workshop leaders are Students from the Institute of Art History of the Ruhr University Bochum who demonstrate themes of modern art to children. While typically this topic can be complex, our program sparks the interest of children, as it is presented in a fun and informal dialogue.
The project was highly popular last year particularly during the Easter and summer holidays. Altogether, approx. 300 pupils participated in the workshops. The concept was initially developed by art history students and three years of experience have helped to prepare the workshops for the upcoming holidays. “By looking at the originals in detail, we would like to provide children and young people with access to a type of art that is often said to be hard to grasp“, says Sebastian Sprenger, one of the initiators of the workshops. “They can become familiar with both museums and the use of artifice“, explains Yvonne Petereit, who is also a student and an initiator of the project.
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Some of the artifice used in art is discussed from a specific aspect, such as the role of light and room, material and color. Ancient pieces of art from Asia and Africa are also looked at and compared to the modern artifice. Verbalizing visual impressions and perceiving consciously are of vital importance. “Ideally,” says Yvonne Petereit, “in our workshops we can raise awareness not only in the field of art but also open eyes generally for the daily environment of the individual.”
Other possible days to participate
A workshop normally consists of two days of the same week (Tuesday and Thursday). But due to the flexible concept, children can participate on other days. Two topics are covered every day for two hours, with an hour lunch-break in the middle. The children are supervised continuously by the students the entire time and food is provided in the lunch break.
